COVID-19 is hitting everyone hard right now, but it is hitting people from minority groups even harder. Not only is it impacting their jobs, but their lives in other ways as well.

One family was stabbed because they appeared Asian and many more Asians have been accused of spreading the virus. We need to pull together and work to stop this form of racism. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment released an expansion of their website to address this: https://covid19.colorado.gov/blog-the-double-bind . The most important thing I believe is to speak up. If you see someone mistreating someone for any reason say something. I know that we are all afraid of then that person turning on us, maybe even with a weapon since guns are so easy to get in our country, but it has to be done. Only by standing up for others will any change happen.

One recent article by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment pointed out that some minority groups could be targeted for wearing face mask because it is assumed that they are up to no good. These people are just trying to stay healthy and yet they are being seen as criminals. We have to move away from these stereotypes that are based on physical appearances. I know that many will argue that to try and “not see color” is bad, but I say examples like this support that we as a world need to be blind to any aspect that relates to a person’s physical appearance. This would remove not only ‘color’ issues, but issues with gender and even disabilities. We need to put the human back into how we think. We all have basic needs that have to be met, like staying healthy. This virus knows no race, gender or any other construct that we may have, but it attacks humans. We are all at risk and we all deserve to be able to protect ourselves. For more information check out: https://covid19.colorado.gov/blog-the-double-bind .
