2025 Lunar New Year Celebrations for Your Calendar

There are many events in Colorado that celebrate Lunar New Year. Below are some of the ones in the Denver metro area. I'm only focusing on free ones r mostly free ones this year. There are also a lot of cultural performances that have tickets from $10 to several hundred. Some even include a 10 course dinner, but those I feel are so pricy that most people can't access them due to the cost. I like to support free events that give more people a chance to learn about and enjoy the different cultures in Colorado.

January 25th
George Washington High School, 655 S. Monaco St Pkwy, 10:30am-3:30pm

This is a great little event that I have been to now for the last 2 years. The event is free to get in. The do have people selling goods and food. There are also companies there, like banks, giving away stuff to advertise their businesses. The food is in the cafeteria and last year it took them a long time to get set up.

Town Center at Aurora (AKA Aurora Mall), 14200 E. Alameda Ave, 2pm-5pm. More Info at: https://towncenterataurora.com/events/lunar-new-year-celebration-at-town-center-at-aurora/

January 26th
On Havana Street Lunar New Year Celebration, At the Stampede 2430 S. Havana St, 12pm-6pm. For more info: https://onhavanastreet.com/events/2025-lunar-new-year-on-havana-street/
I've gone to this event for a couple of years as well. Make sure to have cash with you. In the past a lot of this event has been outside so make sure you dress warm and remember that the weather may impact parts of this event since it is supposed to snow this year.

February 1st-2nd
Far East Center Lunar New Year, 333 S. Federal Blvd, 11am-4pm, For more info check out https://www.denver.org/event/far-east-center-lunar-new-year-welcome-year-of-the-snake/123042/
I tried to go to this event once and never went back. Parking is horrible. The Far East Center has a super small lot and even parking in the near by neighborhoods is impossible. This event is not ADA friendly. You will have to park miles away and walk or try to fight with public transportation. It is super crowded and people do not watch what they are doing. I say be careful if you are going to attend this event.

February 2nd
Stanley Market Place, Clinton Street, 3:30pm-4:30pm. Just a lion dance performance outside of Chi Lin. Just be careful about your timing for parking. The Stanley has gone from entirely free parking to only giving you 2 hours of free parking. Anything past that you have to pay online for. No pay stations.

2pm-8pm: Jade Mountain Lunar New Year, Jade Mountain Brewery & Teahouse, 4233 S. Buckley Road, Aurora, Colorado

They will have special beer releases, lion dancers and Kung Fu demonstrations. I went to this event last year and it was not very good. The food truck they had there could not keep up with the amount of people they had and the quality of the food was very poor. St. Patrick's Day 2020 and the Irish in Colorado

It is the gold and green time of year again. St. Patrick’s day items can be found in most stores and Colorado is known for throwing one of the largest parades this side of the Mississippi. Things are different though this year. Our parade this year was canceled due to fears around the coronavirus. As everyone is questioning what the future will hold, let’s take a look at the Irish in Colorado’s past.

The potato famine of 1845-1849 in Ireland had people fleeing the country in mass. Even though the potato was a new world food, people like the Irish had become dependent on it. With this mass exodus, many of these Irish made their way to Colorado. They found work as “miners, railroad workers, soldiers, and domestic servants” (Flewelling, 6). The Irish were also supportative of the labor movement and unionization. They also helped to lead strikes in Leadville (Flewelling, 9). In April 1882 Oscar Wilde, Irish author, gave a speech at the Tabor Opera House, Leadville, to his fellow countrymen (Trembath, 2015).  Also during the 1920s the KKK targeted the Irish, mostly for their Catholic beliefs (Martinelli, 21).

Even back in 1867 Denver was celebrating St. Patricks day with a ball hosted by the Fenians (Martinelli, 17). The first acknowledged parade was in 1889 (“History”). The St. Patrick’s day parade in Denver was stopped in 1902 due to the KKK’s political influence in the state and it did not start again until 1966 (Martinelli, 23). I found it interesting with the different date that the parade was supposed to start back up. The parade’s website said that the first unofficial/official parade happened in 1962/63 (“History”). There seems to be some confusion as to when the parade started again. Either way it was a long break that was influenced by the political climate in Colorado.

Famous Irish Coloradoans:

J.K. Mullen: Flour mill millionaire who first arrived in Denver in 1871 (Flewelling, 7). He was an Irish man that supported the temperance movement (Flewelling, 7). Mullen also helped create several social groups to support his fellow Irishmen and helped build several churches including the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception which is still open today (Trembath, 2015).

Joseph Murry: Labor leader and one of the founding members of the Greeley agricultural colony (Flewelling, 9).

Events:

March 14th, 2020
                Dry Dock Brewing, 12pm-?
I have been to this event going on 2 years now. The food is amazing.

National MS Education and Awareness Month

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has a good explanation of what MS is: “In multiple sclerosis (MS), damage to the myelin coating around the nerve fibers in the central nervous system (CNS) and to the nerve fibers themselves interferes with the transmission of nerve signals between the brain, spinal cord and the rest of the body. Disrupted nerve signals cause the symptoms of MS, which vary from one person to another and over time for any given individual, depending on where and when the damage occurs.” (See below sites). This means that it can look different for everyone it affects. At a recent convention I talked to a woman that had a genetic terminal version of it. They had only given her 2 years to live and it’s been 20. Not every case is genetic or terminal. Normally you need to get diagnosed by a neurologist and the process can take a while. There are a lot of resources out there and the second one below is where I would recommend you start if you have questions about MS.

MS is really common in Colorado and the experts are still trying to figure out why. I was reading an article somewhere and it said that if you live in Colorado you more than likely know someone with MS because of how common it is. Even with the high rates of MS in Colorado, this at least means that some of the best specialists are here studying it and treating people.
