I picked this book up at one of the Dollar Tree stores in Aurora. I
have been finding a lot of interesting nonfiction books there lately. It's a great example of how you can find culture related books anywhere. This book
caught my attention because it was about Japanese food, which I eat a lot of. Watching
cooking shows is a guilty pleasure for me and this book felt the same way. I
did fill that some of the concepts in this book may be hard for a person that
does not have experience with food, either cooking themselves or watching food
shows, but I feel that the author tried to break these down to simple concepts.
It would have been nice if the book would have looked at foods more familiar to
Americans or even Otaku. It did focus on higher cuisine instead of the more
common or street foods. I picked it up because I wanted to learn more about
Japan from a different angle and food is a great way to do this. My copy seemed
to be free of the editing errors that others have found. I would highly
recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about Japan. 5 stars out of
5 or an A.
