January 2022 Cultural News

1/2/22: "NYC's first health survey of Native American residents reveals inequities" - Even though I see this as a step in the right direction they made many mistakes with this research. First they are classifying Native American as everyone from North America, Central America, and South America. This lumps a lot more into the data then should be there. Also health issues with people from these different regions can be very different and by claiming they are are the same basically makes any data collected useless. Even if you are just looking at North America you need to at least break it down to Natives from the artic circle region to Natives from further south. Body composition is different for these groups and other health factors vary. This shows that attempts in the right direction are being made, but they need to be made by people that understand the differences between both cultural and medical groups. https://nypost.com/2022/01/02/nyc-conducts-first-health-study-of-native-american-residents/?fbclid=IwAR31oaL-kvpTGbCx2jivtlT_3BAR2oSJUUmR1r6Cz1U4l1xMO5io8DrjBkQ

1/17/22: "Why China Is Struggling to Boost Its Birthrate" - I really found this article interesting because they are facing a situation very similar to what Japan has experienced. For my capstone for my first BA degree in anthropology I actually used medical anthropology to look at governmental influence in Japan on declining birthrates for my capstone. This article is the first that I have come across that takes this approach to the issue in China. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-01-17/why-china-is-struggling-to-boost-its-birthrate-quicktake?fbclid=IwAR3iT-oAFltV9egu5R-3qWE5mdbB_Xlu_rpwMdvq3TtpXMBneioRbmlY6qo "Minnesota drops racial formula to dispense COVID-19 treatment; other states still disfavoring Whites" - https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2022/jan/17/minnesota-drops-racial-formula-dispense-covid-19-t/?fbclid=IwAR0qtIR5Dske_HXyds_VbkZv02W1ak_BhSlGFfjaAGzWb7HGh3wW5PMhWM4

1/25/22: "Canadian Indigenous Group Finds Possible Unmarked Graves at Ex-School Site" - This one I included because this is a common issue and we even have a school here in Colorado that is dealing with a similar situation. - https://www.wsj.com/articles/canadian-indigenous-group-finds-possible-unmarked-graves-at-ex-school-site-11643157449?fbclid=IwAR24TfWaTUkyFPxnCkHtLvVPijdNFp3klPJXoShgmzGCzKohdYKVTHZSHC8

1/26/22:"Support your children if they are gay, pope tells parents" - This shows how change can slowly happen with time as perspectives evolve and things can become more inclusive if the right people are in the right positions to make change happen. - https://www.reuters.com/world/support-your-children-if-they-are-gay-pope-tells-parents-2022-01-26/?fbclid=IwAR1tIptpDP5C9-bIInHTRcdyhofPeSkGJaMDiYj279lDvm7AQ61ll8Q4c3c

1/28/22: "States weigh a raft of proposed laws to limit race, sexuality lessons in schools" - I normally don't encourage limiting learning in any way, but I do believe that what is taught must be correct information. I do have a lot of concerns if critical race theory is being taught because not only is it just wrong in so many ways, but in its current form it is both highly biased and racist in and of itself. Many of the people that support critical race theory don't even know where the word slave came from or have an understanding of overall human history. I will actually be taking a deeper look at some of these bills in more detail in a later post. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/states-weigh-raft-proposed-laws-limit-race-sexuality-lessons-schools-n1288108?fbclid=IwAR1BWm2FvXZ6LZQI-6noJfvPhrbnkBTirsvvxIQugb-_C72t7i9zXpBPfEE "Meet the moms of color from Texas fighting book bans at their kids' schools" - I'm not for banning any book, even the Harry Potter books. I think that books where there are issues with either their material or author should have disclaimers in them that educate people on the issue. In this case then these classes should have 2 text books with the different views so that the students can see the differences and try to find the truth between them. Any text book is going to have some type of bias to it, and it is the teachers' responsibility to help students navigate that bias or at the very least to be aware of it. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/meet-moms-color-texas-fighting-book-bans-kids-schools-rcna13701?fbclid=IwAR0k-X1ZcG7D6ipo5MbJ-05f83mCAtxypoEoiW8VKzp3I6IiGDobK41oBng
