The Inclusive Corporation By Griff Hogan (2003)

This book I picked up to expand my knowledge on what companies can do to make their companies more ADA/accessible. I was looking into this subject because of how my research into the VA failing its employees made me want to learn more about even simple things places like the VA could do if they not only cared enough for their employees, but also just wanted to meet the legal requirements under ADA. (For more on the VA and employee abuse check out our sister blog Health's Battle Field). This book I found at the Auraria campus library, so it was there to serve as a learning tool for college students, more then likely in either health programs or business programs.

Notes:
-nearly 50% of people over age 65 have some type of disability (P14). This is a key point that people forget about and that how people like to pretend that younger people also are not disabled. Another thing this book does not go into is also people being overweight. Many Americans are overweight yet people keep making chairs that are not meant to fit people of all sizes (like chairs with arms on them).
-Curb-Cut Effect is where making changes to the environment to help the disabled also ends up helping the general population as well (P14). Like elevators helping people carrying things not have to worry about balancing as they try to climb the stairs.
-(P23) I liked how this book pointed out benches "for the fatigued" as an ADA accommodation that some places are offering. This showed a deeper understanding of how doing things to be ADA friendly can also help out the larger population.
-(P34) Businesses thought that following ADA would cost them huge sums of money, but most have had little to no direct expense for following the Act.
-One place where people can file complaints is with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

I think that this book would be a good introduction for leaders in companies to read. I feel from personal experience and my research that companies will do whatever they can from not following ADA. This is made easy for them since in our country it is so hard to hold companies responsible for violations and no one in the higher levels of government seem concerned at holding them accountable. Unless CEOs, Presidents, and managers start caring and making books like this required readings in their businesses no change will happen. I would recommend this book even though it is dry reading for the most part.
